(1) Student support for disabilities, illnesses, and mental health
At university, students are expected to properly understand the challenges they face in relation to disabilities, illnesses, and mental health. Such autonomy is extremely important when deciding on their career path both during their time at university and after graduation.
As you go through your student life, we would like to utilize the various resources available to us at the university to support you in your personal growth and with an eye toward your career path after graduation.
Steps to start support
① Offer of support
Students and/or guarantors (parents) should request and apply for academic support at university.
If you require support for your studies, you will need to submit a medical certificate (※1) as supporting documentation, and if you have one, a copy of your disability certificate (physical, developmental, mental) or specific disease recipient certificate. Please prepare these before the interview.
In order to submit the form, the consent of the student and the guarantor (parent) is required. In addition, the student must have been informed of the name and details of the diagnosis and must have a proper understanding of it.
- 1. The medical certificate is generally valid for up to three months from the date of issue.
② Interview
During the interview, in addition to the details of the illness or disability, we will ask about any problems the student has had in school life so far, how they have dealt with them, and how we can provide support. If the student needs support in their future university life, we will consult with and confirm with them the support they need and reach an agreement on the details of the considerations. The support required for studying varies from student to student, based on what the student can and cannot do.
③Determining the content of reasonable accommodation (※2)
If support is required, the Student Affairs Committee, the university's decision-making body, will deliberate, consult, and decide on the details of reasonable accommodation.
In principle, the criterion for judgment is that the essence of educational objectives, content, and evaluation should not be changed.
- 2 Under the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, reasonable accommodation is defined as the removal of social barriers "when a person with a disability expresses their desire to have a social barrier removed and the burden of implementing such measures is not excessive."This is different from the "special needs education" available up to high school.
④ Notification of decision and start of support
Once the details of reasonable accommodation have been decided, the student will be notified and support will begin.
(2) Specific examples of consideration
Considerations will be provided to suit individual needs depending on the severity and situation of the disability or illness.
In addition, the support available for each campus and faculty varies depending on the structure of the buildings on campus, the size of the campus site, and the "examination qualifications" established for taking national qualification exams.
