At Otemae University, English studies are not just about memorizing words and grammar learned from textbooks and teachers, but about cultivating the English skills to be able to express what you want to say in your own words. All classes are taught by native-speaking English education specialists. Classes are conducted in an active learning style that teaches the four elements of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a balanced way. There are four levels of classes. Levels change every semester, allowing you to step up according to your English ability.

4 levels of classes

  • Level 1
    Beginner I
    A basic training class for those learning English in English for the first time.
  • Level 2
    Beginner II
    Students mainly study English reading comprehension, grammar, and composition in order to become familiar with English and improve their listening and speaking skills.
  • Level 3
    Intermediate
    This course is an advanced version of Level 2 and will help you develop comprehensive English skills.
  • Level 4
    Advanced
    You will learn how to research, write papers, debate, etc.
English International Communication major
Main subjects
LEO is an English program common to all faculties, and one course will count as two credits toward graduation. Many LEO courses are required or elective courses for English International Communication major.

Students study specialized subjects in English with other international students in their class. While deepening their intercultural understanding through interactions with international students and a curriculum that teaches about the world, there are also many courses that allow students to learn about Japan from an "outside" perspective. This program goes beyond the boundaries of language study and allows students to learn new things, rediscover new things, and have intercultural exchange.

These are full-scale business courses taught only by native-speaking faculty members with extensive business experience. Classes require active participation in group work, presentations, discussions, and other activities in English, so students will improve not only their business theory, but also their practical skills and English communication abilities.

Games and activities available in an English-only environment LEO Leo The English classes were completely different from the English classes I took in junior high and high school. At first, I was confused and anxious, but now I feel more excited every time. LEO Leo There are four levels of difficulty, and you are paired with a classmate at the same level, so you don't have to worry about being left behind in the conversation. Thanks to this, I was able to improve my English while having fun, and in my first speech competition, I came in second place, even though I had high scores on tests in high school and couldn't understand or speak! By acquiring communication skills, I became more positive and was able to actively lead the group in Japanese classes.
