As part of the Marketing Practice I class, we visited Sakura Cray-Pas Corporation, a comprehensive manufacturer of art supplies and stationery. Marketing Practice I is an industry-academia collaboration PBL (problem-based learning) class, in which cooperating companies provide assignments and students propose ideas that they have considered in class. Students work together in group work to tackle assignments, which helps to develop leadership skills.
During this visit, the students were given a tour of the company and an explanation of the theme (issue). First, at the Sakura Art Museum, which Sakura Cray-Pas opened in 1991 as part of the company's 70th anniversary celebrations, the students saw Cray-Pas paintings by female artists born after the 1970s and still active today. The students were surprised at how fascinating the paintings were, far exceeding the image of Cray-Pas paintings they had had up until then.
After the tour, Mr. Hirotoshi Tabe, General Manager of the Marketing Department of the Sales Headquarters, gave a presentation on the company, taking into account Sakura Cray-Pas's development and history, the surrounding environment, an explanation of the products that are popular across a wide range of industries, the development story behind newly developed products, and the assignment for this practical exercise, Marketing I.
The explanation was based on the points that Director Tabe emphasizes as a marketer, and the students were greatly inspired. The students also asked questions about the wide range of business development and business development that supports the growth of people from young children, and the Q&A session lasted about an hour, exceeding the scheduled time with great enthusiasm.
In the future, the students will proceed with actually considering ideas for the assignment, and at the final presentation, Director Tabe will provide feedback.
