I visited Laos for a two-week international midwifery training. In the first week, I participated in the training at the Lao University of Health Sciences and Mahosot Hospital in the capital Vientiane, and in the second week, I participated in outreach activities at the Lao Friends Children's Hospital in the northern provincial city of Luang Prabang. In the obstetrics ward and outpatient department of the hospital in the city, I observed prenatal checkups, delivery assistance, family planning, and infant checkups, and also conducted some health education during those days. In the rural village, I conducted health education and infant checkups. I also accompanied a visiting nurse to a remote home and observed the interaction and care with the family. What made the biggest impression on me was the advice I received from the visiting nurse at the training site: "Don't make assumptions. It's very important not to think simply." Through these words and my experience in Laos, I came to understand that health problems are complicated and intertwined with various factors. I felt that I had grown in particular through the training, in that I was able to develop an "attitude of trying to understand others" and an "attitude of expressing my opinions" through my interactions with Lao people who have different cultures and values from Japan. In addition, I have become more conscious of looking at things from multiple perspectives.

I decided to go to Otemae University Graduate School of International Nursing because I was attracted to the environment, where the Professor warmly support students to become better nurses while respecting the individuality of each student, and the curriculum is in place to cultivate the ability to accept diversity and work in a team. As I have realized while studying here, the closeness to Professor is a major attraction of this graduate school. They listen to students' voices and provide careful guidance until you understand. There is a sense of security in being able to consult with them about various things, such as practical training, research, and national exams.

In the future, I aim to become a nurse who can respect what is important to the pregnant and postpartum women and patients I work with, and provide the best medical care for them and their families. In particular, in the perinatal field, I want to support mothers, children, and their families so that they can have a satisfying pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing experience. To achieve this, I want to improve both my ability to think and act independently and my ability to collaborate. I feel that having my own opinions and sharing them with my team will lead to a satisfying relationship as a midwife with pregnant and postpartum women, children, and their families.

Going to graduate school is a valuable opportunity to deepen your knowledge and face yourself. To be honest, it is by no means an easy path. You may worry or be confused. However, I believe that there is a view you can only see once you take that step. Through my studies at this graduate school, I have come to think deeply about what I value and what kind of midwife I want to become. Meeting friends who share the same aspirations is also a great support. There is no doubt that this is an environment where you can grow greatly as a person through many experiences and encounters.

The training at Kakogawa Prison began with an overview of the facility from a prison officer, followed by a tour of the facility and a small-group discussion with prison officers, administrative staff, and nurses. Participants learned about the purpose and role of the correctional facility, the types of jobs and duties of staff, and deepened their understanding of how correctional treatment that respects the human rights of prisoners has improved over time through its origins and historical background. In addition, they learned about the current situation regarding specific efforts to prevent recidivism and reintegrate into society. It was also a valuable experience to observe the prison work that prisoners are engaged in. What was particularly impressive was that the personal protective equipment that I myself used during the COVID-19 pandemic was being made inside the prison. Through this training, I was able to gain a nursing perspective on how to interact with prisoners after their reintegration into society, taking into consideration their physical and mental health.

Before entering graduate school, I participated in disaster medical care and volunteer medical support activities in Myanmar as a nurse. After that, I was involved in a project to set up a general hospital in the Dhaka region of Bangladesh, where I built the basic system for hospital management and provided educational guidance to local nurses. I decided to enter the Graduate School of International Nursing with the hope of utilizing these experiences to become a person who can contribute to society at a higher level, such as through human resource development and policy recommendations in Graduate School of Global Nursing Science. In the future, I would like to not only work myself, but also be involved in developing human resources who can be active both domestically and internationally in order to contribute to the development of international nursing.

There are many fascinating Professor in this graduate school, which has the theme of "International Global Nursing". In addition to acquiring basic knowledge of research, by learning about the actual activities and research contents from teachers who are active both in Japan and overseas, I can deepen my concrete image and think about how to utilize my research in my future activities. I can learn about health issues and solutions in the international community, and the role of Japan and the nursing profession in the international community. I have many opportunities to summarize my opinions through assignments and discuss them with Lecturer and graduate students, and I feel that I am enjoying graduate school studies. I was able to learn about Japan's health issues and solutions, and policy proposals, which broadened my horizons. There are many opportunities to participate in training and conferences both inside and outside the university, and if you can make use of these opportunities, it should lead to networking. In addition, this graduate school is the only JBI training facility in Japan, which is a very attractive point for me, who majored in international Global Nursing research.

Five graduate students and teachers from this department visited Laos and conducted a two-week "International Midwifery Exercise." The first week of the exercise was spent at Lao Friends Children's Hospital in Luang Prabang in the north of the country, and the second week was spent at Lao University of Health Sciences and Mahosot Hospital in the capital, Vientiane. Local medical professionals and staff instructed them in Japanese, English, and Lao on home visits and hospital care. Among other things, they gained a lot of insight from health education for pregnant women who have difficulty accessing the facilities, and prenatal checkups they conducted with local Global Nursing. They gained a deep understanding that their common sense is not necessarily theirs when it comes to nursing for people who live their daily lives while adhering to their culture, customs, and traditions.
At first, I felt confused by the environment, culture, and lifestyle that were different from Japan. However, as I lived and experienced various cultures, I gained the courage to take on new challenges and was able to feel my own growth. I was also able to converse in English while having fun and even try my hand at making presentations. During the overseas training, I was reminded that the environment, culture, and values of Japan, where I live, are not all "natural." This experience helped me develop an important perspective as I study international nursing, which respects diversity, which is the philosophy of our university.

Visit to the Japanese Nursing Association facility

Issues surrounding nursing
Through the power of organization
I felt there was a possibility of resolving the issue.

This visit to the Japanese Nursing Association was conducted as part of the "Special Lecture on Nursing Management" course, with the aim of understanding the operation and management of the Japanese Nursing Association. Since it was conducted shortly after the "2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake," we learned about the specific process of how the Japanese Nursing Association worked with prefectural nursing associations and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to dispatch disaster relief nurses after the earthquake. We also learned about various efforts to improve the quality of nursing in Japan and public relations activities to develop the next generation. Through the facility tour, we were reminded of the fact that we are part of the Japanese Nursing Association, Japan's largest professional organization, and we also felt a sense of encouragement. We felt that nursing issues that cannot be solved by individuals could be solved by an organization, and this broadened our horizons.
I had always decided that I would study international Global Nursing after gaining experience as a nurse (public health nurse). When I learned that our university was establishing a new graduate school where I could study international Global Nursing, I decided to enroll without hesitation. I am currently conducting a survey on the public health situation of foreign workers living in Japan. As a public health nurse, I would like to acquire the ability to collect accurate data and clearly present that data, and then contribute to local efforts as policy.

Himeji Red Cross Hospital

The on-site judgment required of a midwife
Gain mental strength,
I feel my own growth.

During my training at Himeji Red Cross Hospital, I was involved not only in childbirth but also in the postpartum period, observing the condition of the newborn every day and watching the growth of the newborn together with the mother. I started my training after learning about the process, mechanism and basis of childbirth, but in reality, I found it very difficult to comprehensively assess the condition of the mother and child and judge the progress based on that. Because no two births are the same, I realized that it is important to assess the situation, deal with it appropriately, and be involved in order to ensure that the mother and child have a safe, secure and satisfying birth. I also learned that it is necessary for midwives to determine whether there are any potential risks or dangerous conditions in the process leading up to childbirth and to repeat the assessment.

I was involved in childbirth as a member of a team, but at first I couldn't move as I wanted and I was depressed. But at times like that, I was able to motivate myself by seeing the mothers who were enduring the pain of labor. I was able to grow mentally through my training. I was able to grow thanks to the instructor who supported me by thinking about the direction of care together and saying, "Let's try palpation and auscultation first."
During the training, students can experience childbirth and prenatal checkups not only in hospitals but also in midwifery clinics and clinics. I think the appeal of this graduate school is that students can learn about midwifery care in various medical systems from their student days.

During the tour of Kakogawa Prison, the students learned about the living environment and rehabilitation programs for male and female inmates. They also visited the rooms where pregnant women and newborns can live together after giving birth, and were given information about the health management of inmates. They learned that sharing information and cooperation with staff who have a lot of contact with inmates on a daily basis is important for early detection of abnormalities and health management. They also learned that in many cases, due to their upbringing, inmates were unable to receive support from their guardians or others at a time when they needed it. One thing that changed their way of thinking before and after the internship was that they began to see inmates as local residents, just like the others.

In public health nursing, it is important for the community, government, and medical care to work together to ensure that no one is left behind in the community. I learned that support according to the developmental stage and support to prevent isolation from pregnancy are important in preventing crime and supporting the social reintegration of prisoners. Also, when considering health issues of local residents, I can now consider not only the health issues of the majority, but also the health issues and backgrounds of a minority of people. Visiting a prison is a rare experience. I was able to learn about the health issues facing the country and the region, and it has broadened my horizons.
