Four years to unlock your potential

In this age of diversity, it is difficult to survive by only learning one thing.
The comprehensive learning that was possible only at Otemae University has helped us grow.

Since I was in junior high school, I was interested in talent management, and enrolled in the Faculty of Media and Arts (currently Faculty of Architecture & Arts) where I thought I could learn related subjects, but I found Professor Masaoka's class in my second year very interesting, so I decided to major in marketing. Thanks to the crossover system, I was able to study both media and management. In the career design class, we repeatedly gave presentations, so I was able to approach the actual job interview without feeling nervous. As I learned about various industries through part-time jobs and internships, I felt that advertising was a good fit for me, and after working hard on my job hunt, I was able to get the job I wanted.

I chose this faculty because I have been interested in English and foreign countries since I was a child. Until high school, I only studied English for entrance exams, so classes taught entirely in English were very refreshing and stimulating! Before I knew it, my listening and speaking skills had naturally improved. Also, taking intercultural communication classes made me want to interact with even more diverse people, so I decided to teach Japanese to Burmese people. To achieve this, I was able to take Japanese language education classes outside of my major, which was only possible at Otemae University. The cycle of learning one thing giving rise to new interests, which then gave rise to new learning, helped me grow as a person.

I chose the architecture course because I was vaguely interested in interior design. However, I was unsure before I started studying, so the system that allowed me to change courses was a relief. In my first and second years, I made sure to take classes that interested me, such as English and web design, even if they were outside my field of expertise. In my third year, I took an architecture workshop and once again realized how interesting architecture is. From there, I gained experience outside of school, mainly through seminars, helping to write for an architecture magazine and participating in competitions, and when I started job hunting, I was hired by the company of my choice. Although there were restrictions on my actions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to think about what I could do in the given environment, and this may be the biggest growth I've seen.

山本未希さんイメージ02 Although I graduated from a university in the United States, I was not confident in my English ability, so I hid it and worked in the bridal industry. After I retired, I was thinking, "It will be tough in the future without qualifications," when I saw a poster in town for the establishment of an international Department of Nursing. I suddenly had the thought, "Is it possible to do something with my English ability if I add a nursing qualification?" From there, I quickly prepared and was able to enroll. After enrolling, in addition to English and nursing, I experienced various practical skills and training. By doing training and training in many places such as communities for foreign residents, multilingual centers, elderly care facilities, and prisons, I realized that nursing does not only mean hospitals, and the word "diversity," which used to be something that only happened to other people, became familiar to me. I feel that it is only here that I can feel the field of "international nursing" firsthand. The training at Chiang Mai University in Thailand, which I visited in my fourth year, was the culmination of my studies, as I communicated in English while working in the field of medical care with different cultures and ways of thinking. I would like to use the confidence I gained there to contribute to local medical care and become someone who can solve the problems facing society.
