Message from Graduates
Faculty of Global Nursing

I work as a nurse at JCHO Hoshigaoka Medical Center. When I participated in my internship, I was attracted by the close relationship between the patients and the nurses, which is why I decided to work at this hospital. I feel that the hospital's distinctive features of providing medical care that is close to the community and the friendly relationships with patients are a perfect fit for my view of nursing. As a foreign national of Korean descent living in Japan, I decided to enroll in Faculty of Global Nursing at Otemae University, hoping to learn more about diversity as well as Global Nursing. There are things you can only learn at this faculty, such as global learning through overseas training and nursing for not only Japanese people but also foreigners both in and out of Japan. I would like to put that learning to good use and do my best.

Before entering university, I was undecided whether to pursue nursing or English, but when I found out about Otemae University, where I could study both, I decided to enroll. At the hospital where I work, there are foreign patients who are not very good at Japanese, so I think that being able to study medical English at university has become an advantage for me. Also, the words that my teachers told me while I was a student, "Aim to be a nurse who never gives up," have stayed with me to this day.To be honest, after I started working, there were times when I felt bad and negative, but when I think back to how I overcame the harsh training I underwent as a student and continued, it gave me confidence and made me want to look forward and do my best. In the future, I want to gain more experience and become a nurse that medical experts and patients' families think they can trust, and who also values the connections between people.

I work at a psychiatric hospital. It is a base hospital for psychiatric emergency care in Osaka, and all eight wards are psychiatric. By interacting with various patients, I realize how deep the psychiatric field is, and my motivation to learn is stimulated every day. During my four years at Faculty of Global Nursing, I learned a lot about "diversity" and felt it closer to me. I was able to experience many cultural differences and differences in values through my practical training. Because of that experience, I don't feel rejected even when I encounter a wide variety of people in the psychiatric department, and I think I am able to make an effort to get to know them in a good way, being interested and having fun. From now on, I would like to continue to learn as much as I can at my current workplace. I am still often perplexed by persistent complaints, but I would like to gain as much experience as possible so that I can deal with each patient's situation in a way that makes them feel at ease when undergoing treatment.

Otemae University is the first university in Japan where you can study international nursing, and I enrolled because I thought I would be able to broaden my horizons and spend a fulfilling four years here. Currently, I work as an operating room nurse, involved in surgeries in a variety of medical departments, and I spend my days learning a lot. This job allows me to improve my knowledge and skills in line with the latest medical technology, and I also learn a lot from collaborating with other professions, not just doctors, such as radiologists and medical technicians. I feel that the knowledge I gained from studying anatomy and physiology and the knowledge I gained from studying cancer in seminars are being put to good use in my current job, which involves surgery. In the future, I would like to gain knowledge and skills so that I can take on difficult surgeries such as cardiac surgery and brain surgery, as well as emergency surgeries. I also want to become a nurse who can provide support, such as by talking to patients, so that they can undergo surgery with peace of mind.

I entered Otemae University because I thought I could become a nurse who can adapt to an increasingly globalized society, with the opportunity to study abroad, learn about the work of airport nurses, and take classes entirely in English. In fact, I think it was because of my studies at Faculty of Global Nursing that I was able to communicate without fear with patients who were not very good at Japanese, and was able to use gentle Japanese and English. In the future, I would like to gain experience as a nurse overseas and learn the differences between the medical system and nursing system in Japan. After returning to Japan, I would like to use that experience to become someone who can improve the environment for nurses in Japan so that they can provide better care. There are many things at Otemae University's Faculty of Global Nursing that you probably won't be able to experience at other universities, so I hope you will take full advantage of this excellent environment and learn all you can about nursing.

While I was thinking about my career path after graduation, I learned that the Graduate School of International Nursing was opening, and so I decided to study in the field of midwifery practice science. This was because I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a midwife under the tutelage of the respected professors I met at university. At the same time, I wanted to deepen my knowledge of international nursing that I had acquired over my four years of university life through research and lectures. At graduate school, I am learning at a higher level from an international perspective about what kind of thinking and attitude is important as a medical professional. In recent years, the number of foreigners living in Japan who are becoming medical recipients has been increasing, and so we are working to ensure that they receive the support they need. What do foreign residents actually want from medical professionals, and what kind of support do they need? In addition, in the lectures, students also learn about medical translation, which is essential for communication, deepening their learning so that they can provide support that better meets the needs of the target patients.

The reason I went to graduate school was because I wanted to become a public health nurse and further deepen the knowledge of international nursing I had learned at university. As the name suggests, the Public Health Nursing Practice Science field I went to studies public health in order to become a public health nurse. Furthermore, in each lecture that incorporates international nursing (= diversity), we learn about various values, customs, and the medical systems of each country from multiple perspectives. In addition, there are opportunities to present research at and participate in academic conferences overseas, as well as practical training at quarantine stations, so I think the appeal of this graduate school is that it allows us to have valuable experiences that we cannot have at other graduate schools.I am also grateful for the environment at Otemae, where there are many teachers and advisors who are willing to listen to me, whether they are from a university or graduate school. I would like to continue to aim to be a public health nurse who understands diverse values and is supportive and reliable. I believe that getting to know the other person naturally leads to the care they need.
