Four-year learning process

First grade

You will learn basic knowledge such as the types of Architecture and acquire skills such as how to draw Architecture blueprints.
Second Year

This course deepens your specialized knowledge of Architecture planning and structure, and improves your ability to design residential Architecture.
Third grade

Students will tackle the challenge of designing public Architecture such as art museums and libraries, and acquire the skills to conceive and design.
4th grade

Students will set a research theme, create an Architecture work, or conduct research on Architecture and compile the results in a graduation thesis.

I think the fun part of studying Architecture at Otemae University is the high degree of freedom. The teachers are happy to cooperate with and guide you in whatever you want to do. For example, even if you propose a unique shape for a design assignment, they don't reject it outright, but rather they help you think about how to make it a reality. When I sent my presentation board to the teacher while it was in progress in a competition, he wrote me a long message pointing out areas to improve. Being able to carefully teach us the knowledge and experience that students alone cannot fill helps us improve our skills. The high degree of freedom and teachers who are supportive of students are what make studying at Otemae University so appealing.

Would you be surprised if I told you that "studying Architecture requires destruction"? In this class, students will create their own concrete, rebar, and wooden test specimens and destroy them with a testing machine. This is to allow students to experience the knowledge of Architecture materials they learned in the lectures, such as how much pressure the test specimens can withstand during the destruction process and what the differences in the characteristics of each material are. Another point of this class is that experimental results do not always follow theory. Differences in the method of making the test specimens or climatic conditions often lead to unexpected results, and students will develop the ability to mobilize all their knowledge to analyze the causes.

In this class, students who have been designing small spaces such as detached houses will design "places to live together" and "places where people gather" in the fall semester of their second year. Students will create according to concepts they have constructed themselves while sorting out various conditions. They will learn the design process and try and error every day to create drawings that effectively convey the design intent. It is these experiences of both success and failure that will lead to their next creation. This is a required course for Architecture majors, so students who are considering obtaining Architecture 's license should definitely take this course. Not only will you learn the design process, but you will also be able to experience the difficulty and fun of designing a space.

In Professor Kawakubo's seminar at Otemae University 's Faculty of Architecture & Arts, they conduct field research to investigate the current state of vacant houses in regional cities and rural areas, and propose ways to renovate them or use them as housing for new residents to prevent them from becoming dangerous due to being abandoned.
The seminar has been working with the NPO "Owase Living Support Center" in Owase City, Mie Prefecture to tackle the problem of vacant houses, and as part of that, students replaced the papering on the sliding doors of an old house in Kuki Town called "Kaneto." "Kaneto" was once a dried fish shop, and on a site of about 1,000 square meters, it is a distinctive building that recalls the past, with a rounded "mukuri" roof at the entrance and family crests on the gutters.
The four seminar students who participated this time took on the challenge of replacing about 40 damaged shoji screens. It was a painstaking task of carefully peeling off the old shoji paper and carefully pasting new paper, but they gradually seemed to get the hang of it, and when they finally put the replaced shoji screens back in place, it felt like they had a glimpse of the atmosphere of the luxurious mansion of the past.
In the future, we plan to work on replacing the floorboards and other parts, with the aim of using the building as a student accommodation facility, etc.
