You will acquire knowledge and skills to utilize the power of interior design in various places such as living spaces and entertainment spaces to move people's hearts. You will also learn about the unique texture and appearance of interior design through practical exercises in a highly practical curriculum.

    There are also plans for practical exercises in cooperation with local governments. For example, students can renovate a vacant house and experience designing a space that will attract tourists. This will hone the knowledge and thinking required for interior and spatial design.

    In spatial design, information that cannot be understood from blueprints, such as lighting and visibility, is also important. In this major, students will learn about CAD, which can simulate these. Students will also acquire a variety of specialized skills.

Four-year learning process

  • First grade
    Students will learn interior design history and terminology, as well as basic knowledge and techniques in drafting and architecture.
  • Second Year
    You will learn about the characteristics of color, light, and materials, and acquire the ability to think about interior design using CAD.
  • Third grade
    Through class and seminar activities, students will create interior proposals and space designs for actual buildings.
  • 4th grade
    You will learn more advanced spatial design techniques, including proposals for renovating or remodeling an entire building.

What do you need for your work?
I gained the ability to think objectively.

I applied to this faculty because I thought it would broaden my future possibilities, since even those with a liberal arts background can learn architecture from scratch and can learn beyond their own department. In class, teachers do not tell me what to do, but rather clearly explain what I do not understand and what needs to be improved, so I can freely think about what I need to do to improve my work. Even in the design and spatial design assignments that I only completed at first, as I deepened my learning, I began to think objectively about the necessary elements to make it easy for the viewer to understand and enjoy. I think that this way of thinking will be useful not only in creating works, but also after I enter society.

When moving on to the fields of architecture and interior design, utilizing existing buildings is an increasingly important theme in society. Being conscious of utilizing existing buildings is thought to lead to the design of sustainable buildings. Therefore, in this class, you will learn to design while being conscious of full-scale buildings. There are two assignments. The first assignment is to measure and draw an actual building (Otemae University Taketatsuan), and the second assignment is to visit an actual home that is also a cultural asset and talk to the residents. I would like you to be interested in designs that connect the past to the future, such as the history of the building, its relationship with the town, the thoughts of the current owners, and what they want to convey to the next generation.
