Historical materials and cultural assets,
True value and meaning of existence
Let's feel it.

In history studies, such as Japanese history, students study historical documents, original items, and other historical materials that were created during the same period as the subject of their study. They learn how important these documents are, how they must not be lost, and the significance of preserving cultural assets.

Modern infectious diseases,
Let's read from history.

The current COVID-19 pandemic. Cholera was prevalent in Japan at the end of the Edo period. What is common between then and now is that when an unknown disease claimed many lives, various rumors spread and people fell into panic. However, even in such circumstances, people remained calm and searched for clues to resolve the situation and overcame difficulties. Here we can also learn how to accurately interpret objective facts, which is the foundation of historical studies.Koji OzakiProfessor Master of Arts

Japanese history and manga.
This is the only place where you can learn at the same time.

I love Japanese history and I love drawing manga. For someone like me, Otemae University is the ideal place. What made the biggest impression on me over the past two years were the lectures on early modern Japanese history. I was able to learn in depth and without bias about people who were discriminated against. As for lectures outside of my major, I took a comic media study course. I learned a lot, from the essentials of manga production to practical techniques. I also took lectures in other fields, such as psychology and literature, and as a result, I feel like my horizons have broadened and my knowledge has steadily increased. In other words, I have more ideas for my manga.

原典から読み解く、「ナマ」の日本の歴史

The world of "ancient documents" may be completely incomprehensible at first, but once you've read a little, it becomes incredibly fascinating. In this class, students will read ancient documents together with a guide explaining the so-called "cursive writing," and also understand the historical background of the time. They will enjoy the fun of unravelling history based on historical materials. The appeal of coming into contact with ancient documents is not only that they can tell you about how people lived in the past, but also that they can discover new historical information. In fact, students who have become accustomed to ancient documents continue to read with curiosity, finding realistic descriptions that were not in textbooks, and seem to deepen their interest in history.

We will introduce the activities of warring lords and their territorial rule, focusing on ancient documents. It will be fascinating to be able to confirm historical facts and read into the preferences and interests of people at the time based on ancient documents, which are historical materials created by people who lived in the same era. In the class, we choose protagonists such as Mori Motonari and Tokugawa Ieyasu, and discuss the changes in the political situation surrounding these people and the hobbies and tastes of people living at that time. We believe that students will be able to develop an attitude of properly investigating the basis of information, and that by learning about the thinking of warring lords, whose ideas differ from our own today, they will be able to become aware of the diversity of society.
