To improve yourself,
It is important to look back on history.

I am often asked what the use of studying history at university is. It is true that there are only a limited number of situations in which history is useful in a superficially visible way. However, it is clear that history, which "looks back" on the activities that humanity has accumulated up to now, including both the good and the bad, is important. I think what is needed is for more people to honestly think that "history is important."Masaaki YamaguchiProfessor Doctor of Literature

An environment where you can learn what you want to learn.
My interest in history never ends.

I am currently studying Korean history, and the reason for this is that I got hooked on historical dramas from the Joseon dynasty. For example, in those days in Korea, there were women who were like courtesans in Japan, and in the dramas they wore gorgeous costumes. However, in reality, they were in a slave-like status, and it is very interesting to learn about this gap. At this university, you can freely study what you want to study, so the fun of learning never ends.

あなたの知らない、文明の交差点「敦煌」の歴史を古写本から解読。

In this class, you will be challenged to explain the "Dunhuang Manuscripts," a valuable historical document. It is not easy to decipher Chinese texts, but the process of following clues and finding the answer is fascinating. Dunhuang is a place where Chinese civilization, which spread throughout East Asia, intersects with the nomadic and trading civilizations that spread throughout Central Asia. In other words, by unraveling the history of Dunhuang, you will not only be able to see the "history of China from the center of China" that you have learned in school classes, but also the image of "China seen from Central Asia." You will be surprised at how one-sided the image of China that you thought you knew was.

Learning about various ways of looking at history and the image of world history and their backgrounds will give you an opportunity to relativize your own perspective and values, including your view of history, and become aware of what strongly influences your own perspective. Some participants said, "I learned that the perspective of history changes depending on the researcher, and that there are various interpretations." In addition, learning about the characteristics and background written in history books will also help you acquire an attitude of critically consuming various information from the Internet, newspapers, books, etc.
