Designed by Tadao Ando, this space is filled with intellectual curiosity, aesthetic exploration, and creative energy.
Background
When modernist culture was flourishing in the Hanshin area, businessman Iwamoto Einosuke had his private residence here. Iwamoto is known for donating the Osaka Nakanoshima Central Public Hall. Founded in 1916, the Central Public Hall continues to be a cultural hub where eras and people intersect even today. Meanwhile, across the street from Iwamoto's residence, on the site where the Sakura Shukugawa Campus Main Building now stands, was the private residence of Nishinomiya businessman Fukui Jihei. With the haiku pen name Souko, he had a deep knowledge of culture and, through interactions with many cultural figures such as haiku poets, painters and writers, he hosted art lectures and art exhibitions in Nishinomiya and was passionate about promoting culture in the region.
And to the next generation
Since its establishment in 1992, Otemae Art Center has played a role as a base for cultural dissemination, hosting exhibitions, academic lectures, mini-concerts, and a place for current students to present their work, passing on the spirit of our predecessors to the next generation and serving as a place where cultural creators can gather. Currently, it is also used as a classroom for architecture majors at universities and junior colleges, making it a truly living learning space for students.
