From February 5th to 9th, 2024, ten third-year students Faculty of Global Nursing completed an internship at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore.
Nanyang Polytechnic is a three-year national technical school established in 1992 with six departments, similar to a Japanese technical college. It is characterized by its education aimed at improving practical skills and developing creative abilities, and has approximately 13,000 students enrolled.
This time, I had the opportunity to do my internship in the nursing course at the Faculty of Health & Social Science. I visited a community center that local people use for rehabilitation and meals, and experienced simulation exercises using adult dolls. It was an opportunity to learn about nursing education using the latest technology in Singapore, and the reality of community medical care in Singapore, where the birthrate is declining and the population is aging.

Below are some comments from participants of the training.

・I was able to notice the good points of the nursing and medical systems in Japan and Singapore. I was also inspired by the difference in educational levels and gained a new perspective.
I believe that respecting differences leads to the provision of diverse nursing care. Even after I become a nurse, I will not forget this experience and will use it to help me grow.

・Through the internship, I learned about the medical system in Singapore and the differences between Japan and Singapore through simulation education, which gave me a new perspective that I will need as I continue to study nursing. In addition, through the internship at the facility, I was able to learn how to provide nursing care to people with various cultures and what kind of place life is for people with disabilities and their families who provide care.

・The simulation education in Singapore not only helped me develop an image of the clinical setting, but also taught me that the most important thing is to exchange opinions from various angles during the subsequent debriefing and deepen my understanding of how to respond to patients whose conditions change. Furthermore, I was able to experience the differences with Japan and learn the importance of diverse nursing care.
