From November 9th to 16th, six third-year students Faculty of Global Nursing stayed in South Korea for eight days and participated in International Nursing Practicum III at Yonsei University for five days.
Yonsei University is one of the most prestigious universities in Korea. On the first day of the training, the students toured the university's facilities, including a training room that recreated an operating room and a seminar room where teachers could monitor students through a one-way mirror. The students were amazed by the beautiful campus, which combines historic buildings with cutting-edge equipment. In the lecture, they learned about the cutting-edge treatment and nursing system at the neighboring Severance Hospital, and heard an explanation of the support provided to help new nurses build their careers and become full-fledged nurses, as well as the measures being taken to ensure that nurses work safely and efficiently. They also visited a nearby facility where they could experience being an elderly person, learning about the daily lives of elderly people in Korea through their experiences, and on the final day, they gave a presentation in English about what they had learned over the week, including a comparison between Japan and Korea.
During their stay, a student from Yonsei University who will be coming to our university in January next year showed them around Seoul's famous sites and enjoyed meals together. There were many opportunities to deepen mutual exchanges, and it was a week in which they were able to learn not only about Korean medicine and nursing but also about the culture. The students had made thorough preparations for their trip, including receiving guidance on crisis management and cross-cultural understanding in advance, and were able to complete their one-week internship without any problems.
Below are some comments from participants of the training.
・This time, I did a one-week internship at Yonsei University in Korea. It was difficult to understand the lectures in English, but I was able to actively communicate in both English and Korean. The university and the nearby hospital are very large, and the university's simulation center (laboratory) and hospital are equipped with cutting-edge technology and facilities, and I felt that they were very excellent in terms of advanced technology and practice. At the same time, in the current age of digitalization, when I thought about the problem of aging, I thought that we should consider how to provide elderly-friendly medical care at the same time as the digitalization of society. It was a valuable opportunity to learn and think about the issues.

・As it was my first time abroad, I was very worried about whether I would be able to communicate. I also felt the language barrier. However, I didn't give up and learned that I could communicate in English by putting together the words I knew. In terms of medical care, Korea and Japan are similar in that they strive to provide better medical care to patients, and I was impressed that they have the same way of thinking even across borders. This internship gave me the motivation to learn other languages and to actively engage in international exchange.
