Assistant Professor Mizuyo Tonosaki of Faculty of Business Administration gives a lecture on food called "Food Marketing." Guest speakers from the business world are invited to give specific examples and to deepen students' understanding by listening to the voices of those involved. In the spring semester, three guest speakers gave lectures, and we will introduce the contents of the third (final) lecture below.
■May 31 (Fri), July 19 (Fri) Food Marketing Speaker: Chinami Sanada, Managing Director, Sanada Co., Ltd.
The theme of this event was "Opening up the future of dried foods." Sanada Co., Ltd. was founded in 1904 (Meiji 37), and this year marks its 120th anniversary. The company is a sustainable family business that aims to be a 1000-year-old company, and is based in Kyoto, manufacturing and selling dried foods. First, based on the idea at the time of the company's founding that "business originates from the producers," the company traced the evolution of the business, which has been run mainly by women for 120 years, and explained that its essence is not sales-first, but "management within one's means," based on contributions to various stakeholders. In addition, the students were given an easy-to-understand explanation of Sanada Co., Ltd.'s unique marketing philosophy, which is different from what they have learned so far, using examples of their own products. To conclude, the talk ended with words that will affect the students' future careers, saying, "The best way to predict the future is to carve out your own future." In the students' comments, they wrote, "This touched my heart, and I wanted to carve out my own future." Finally, the class ended with a presentation on the theme of "new ways to sell dried foods" as a group assignment.
Next, on July 19th, each group gave a presentation on their efforts in response to the assignments they had received from the previous class. Initially, each group started by learning what "dried foods" are. Based on what they had learned so far and the marketing concepts they had learned from Sanada last time, each group came up with their own original ideas and gave a creative presentation. In the end, the group that came up with a playful proposal for making wakame fun to eat, based on Japanese culture and aimed at home consumers and inbound tourists, won the Sanada Prize. Sanada then concluded the two classes with a critique that said, "You have gained a new perspective on dried foods from the students' perspective."
