Students from our university's Faculty of Health and Nutrition participated in the Food Education Summer Festival, held at the Nishi Ward Office in Osaka City on Friday, August 2nd, as Osaka City Healthy Partners.
At the event, a total of 14 volunteers, including seven second-year students and seven first-year students, participated in food education activities.
Unlike other wards, Nishi Ward's "Food Education Summer Festival" was an event mainly for preschool children and their parents. Many children from nearby nursery schools also participated. Otemae University set up a booth as a "Food Education Quiz Corner" and held activities such as "Guess the vegetable flower", "Bean carrying", "Find the odd one out in the sea", and "Coloring". Bean carrying is a game in which you move dried soybeans from one bowl to another in 30 seconds while being conscious of the correct way to hold chopsticks. Children start learning how to hold chopsticks from around the age of 3, so there were lots of fun matches between friends and parents. More than 160 people participated in Otemae University booth in total.
In addition, at this event, after arriving at the ward office, we were asked to help out at the booths of organizations other than the university, so we took turns working there. After the event, a registered dietitian from Nishi Ward commented, "I was impressed by how well you spoke to the children."
This is the last summer activity, but we plan to hold more in the fall semester in September, October, and November. We hope that students in Faculty of Health and Nutrition will continue to actively participate in food education activities.
