For five days from November 3rd to 12th, 13 third-year students Faculty of Global Nursing participated in the International Nursing Practicum III at the University of Adelaide in Australia.
At the University of Adelaide, I studied nursing English in the morning language course and learned about nursing in Australia in the afternoon. In the afternoon classes, I attended lectures on palliative care, emergency nursing, nursing for the indigenous Aboriginal people, and had the opportunity to hear about nursing practice from the specialized nurses working at St Andrew's Hospital in the city. I was able to learn about the current situation in Australia while comparing it with nursing and medical care in Japan.
During the program, the students stayed with host families, experienced local life and culture, and enjoyed interacting with their host families.
Prior to participating in the internship, the students received guidance on crisis management and intercultural understanding, conducted advance study related to the internship, and thoroughly prepared for their trip, successfully completing the five-day internship.
Here are some impressions from the participants of the training.
・Through my overseas internship, I was able to learn about the differences between medical care in Australia and Japan, the differences in learning methods at universities, and the anxiety of not being able to communicate in the language. In terms of differences in insurance systems, I learned that Japan's universal health insurance system is a very excellent system, but that not all citizens in any country can receive medical care equally. In terms of learning methods, I learned that at the University of Adelaide, nursing is studied in a very realistic environment using simulation dolls and VR, and there are various study methods. I also felt anxious about not being able to convey what I wanted to say in a country where the language is different. This experience led to various learnings for me, such as how to respond to foreigners who come to Japanese hospitals and whether there are other ways to communicate besides language. By going on an overseas internship, I was able to experience a culture different from Japan and had a very fulfilling time.

・During my internship at the University of Adelaide in Australia, I spent a week in a homestay. It was my first time overseas and my first time homestaying, so I was nervous, but my host family spoke English to me kindly and in a way that suited my English ability, so I was able to spend the time in an environment where it was easy for me to understand and communicate in English. Going to a country gave me the motivation to learn about the characteristics of that country, and it was a good experience that deepened my knowledge by learning about the differences and characteristics between Japan and Australia.
