[Contents of the paper]
In this study, we compared and analyzed the epidemic status of syphilis in Japan and South Korea from 2011 to 2019. Data were analyzed based on statistics from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a result, in Japan, infections increased sharply, especially among women aged 20-29, with the number of cases increasing 8-fold (827 cases in 2011 to 7,007 cases in 2018). On the other hand, in South Korea, the majority of infected people were men aged 20-39, and the number of cases increased only 1.82-fold (965 cases in 2011 to 1,753 cases in 2019). In addition, an increase in congenital syphilis has also been confirmed in Japan, and a review of preventive measures is considered urgent. In contrast, South Korea has shown a relatively stable trend, which may indicate more effective infection control. This study suggests the importance of public health measures according to the circumstances of each country.
