The "2024 Student Lighting Design Competition," sponsored by the Kansai Branch of the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEICE), was held, and Nanami Kanaoka, a third-year student in the Light Environment Seminar of the Architecture Course Faculty of Architecture & Arts, won the Excellence Award, and Ki-Ge Hayashi and Ryo Kawaguchi were also selected.
This design competition was aimed at students studying at universities and vocational schools in the Kansai area, and called for a wide range of proposals for the design, layout and functional planning of lighting fixtures using a variety of light sources, with the aim of contributing to the development and promotion of human resources in the field of lighting fixture design.
This year's theme was "It would be nice to have light like this in our daily lives," and proposals were sought for comfortable lighting fixtures that are close to people.
The three works selected from the submitted works are as follows:
[Excellent Award]
Kanaoka Nanami's work "Tidiness Lighting" is a proposal based on the idea of utilizing lighting from an educational perspective.
It is believed that through tidying up, the project can contribute to conveying the meaning of color symbols that are commonly used in society, and the perspective of discovering lighting functions in this field was highly praised.
[Selected Winners]
Hayashi Kikei's work "Akari no Ha" (Light Leaves) is designed to improve safety on dark roads at night caused by the shadows of trees and hedges, while also taking into consideration the impact on the ecosystem.
The energy-saving design also takes climate change measures into consideration, and the ingenuity in reducing the burden on the plants was also praised.
[Selected Winners]
Kawaguchi Ryo's work "Willlight Chair - A Sustainable Wheelchair" focuses on wheelchairs and proposes a "wheelchair-specific lighting device" to make nighttime movement safer.
This was why the proposal was evaluated for its high social value as a solution to the social issue of Japan's aging population.
I hope to utilize this experience in my future design activities.
The winners will present their work and an awards ceremony will be held at the Lighting Forum in Kansai, hosted by the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan, on February 28th.
