A Christmas party was held by the Type 1 Diabetes Patient Association on December 22, 2024, and was attended by approximately 40 people, including patients and their siblings, as well as their families and medical professionals. A total of five students from our university, a fourth-year student Faculty of Global Nursing, and a third- and second-year student Faculty of Health and Nutrition also participated as volunteer staff.
The students interacted with the participants by helping run the games and bingo tournaments and watching a picture-story show by a veteran performer who lives with muscular dystrophy.
The participants also received a lecture from a doctor on the latest information, including insulin treatments that are expected to be used in Japan in the future, the current state of pancreas and islet transplants, and research and development of smart insulin as an oral medication.
Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas' function to secrete insulin, a hormone that lowers blood sugar levels, is impaired. Subcutaneous administration of insulin preparations is currently the mainstream treatment, and the amount of carbohydrates in the diet, which is what causes the greatest rise in blood sugar levels, is one of the important factors in determining the amount of insulin to be administered.
In addition, the Japan Diabetes Society and the Japan Diabetes Association are considering changing the name of the disease "diabetes."
