On Saturday, May 17th, second-year students in the Public Health Nursing Practice Science and Midwifery Practice Science departments of Graduate School of Global Nursing Science, with the cooperation of the NPO Japan-Vietnam Support Association, provided health education to eight Vietnamese living in Japan on topics such as pre-pregnancy diet, childbirth, childcare, and related procedures.
Each of the graduate students, who aim to become public health nurses/midwives, based their learning to date on the health education goals, the content they wanted to convey, and the most effective way to convey it, and then made a plan. By bringing together their plans and keeping in mind the perspectives of the participants, they were able to put together a single health education program, which involved numerous discussions, revisions, and rehearsals before heading out on the day.
On the day, we adopted participatory methods and aimed to provide interactive health education. The event was held in a relaxed atmosphere, and participants actively participated. In a review afterwards, each graduate student identified their next challenge while referring to the participant questionnaire, and it was a valuable experience that will lead to future learning.
Public health nurses and midwives are important professionals who work together to support the health of mothers and children in Japanese society, utilizing their respective expertise. Through this opportunity, we were able to further deepen our understanding of each other's expertise through our collaboration.
