One fourth-year student and seven third-year students Faculty of Health and Nutrition, along with Associate Professor Sachiko Komatsu, participated in a spring exchange event organized by the Type 1 Diabetes Patient Association, held at Tennoji Zoo. The purpose of this event was to create friendships between people living with Type 1 diabetes, from preschoolers to high school students, to promote interaction between caregivers, and to promote interaction between patient families and medical professionals.

As volunteers, the students walked around the zoo with the sick child and his siblings, and also played with them after lunch. They also provided care (supplementary meals) for the sick child who became prone to hypoglycemia during the walk, and it was an opportunity for them to experience what they had learned in university classes.

Associate Professor Komatsu, together with three doctors, attended a gathering for caregivers and answered their questions about life during convalescence, including insulin therapy, the use of blood glucose measuring devices, and dietary therapy.
