We are holding an exhibition of works by Jules Kayo, an exchange student from the École des Beaux-Arts (Paris National School of Fine Arts).
The works created under the guidance of Professor Izawa and Lecturer Maeda are on display in classroom D12 of Art Center. Please come and take a look.
~Message from Juru Kayo~
This exhibition depicts the experiences I had during my trip to Japan that made an impression on me.
I came to Japan because I was most interested in the woodworking craftsmanship and unique Architecture (carpentry).
In my work I like to focus on themes of design and Architecture.
I learned about the concept of "wabi-sabi" here and tried to express the simplicity of natural things, for example bare boards and slightly rusted metal.
I like to contrast the imperfection found in nature with the perfection created by man.
For the small chair model in the exhibition, we tried our hand at metal processing.
He also took the time to paint every detail in the painting, then quickly added a lion's face at the end.
It's as if a filter was placed in front of the landscape. This simple, and perhaps slightly rough, final stroke is imbued with a free sense of artistry.
The demon on the table represents the anxiety and nightmares I felt when I first came to Japan, probably because my daily life changed drastically and I experienced a strong culture shock.
And the small clay pieces (shaped like tiles) are based on patterns I've seen in modern Japanese houses. I was surprised and inspired by the wide variety of motifs used in each house.
