It was December, and the experiments and practical training of the fall semester finally reached their final class. This time, we will introduce "Nutrition Education Theory Practice I" by Faculty of Health and Nutrition 2nd graders.

The class envisioned a 15-minute nutrition education lecture for 15-20 third- and fourth-graders, with students working in groups of four or five to plan and create a program on one of three themes: "breakfast," "vegetables," or "sweets and beverages." Preparations took several weeks, with students setting the "objectives" they wanted to convey to children through nutrition education, creating a plan, and presenting their results on the final day of the class.

The students actively exchanged opinions and discussed ideas for improving teaching methods and teaching materials. During the rehearsal before the presentation, they were seen making improvements based on the instructor's comments, and it was impressive to see them working hard to create an even better course.

The presentations incorporated quizzes and games, and were carefully designed to allow the children to learn while having fun. By creating teaching materials tailored to the target audience and thinking about how to convey information in an easy-to-understand manner, the participants gained communication and teaching skills.

The following comments were received from the students:

"We were able to work together as a group and share ideas."

・"I struggled with choosing words that even third and fourth graders could understand, and coming up with ways to keep them interested in listening."

In "Nutrition Education Practicum I," students learned how to plan and implement programs, including the techniques and approaches needed for nutrition education for individuals and groups to lead to desirable eating habits, and the creation of effective teaching materials, all of which are necessary for registered dietitians to provide nutrition education to individuals and groups. The aim is to develop skills that can be utilized in the field in the future.
