Twenty-six first to fourth year students Faculty of Global Nursing volunteered at the Osaka Marathon 2026, which was held on February 22nd.

The students were stationed at four of the 18 aid stations, and were primarily responsible for checking in runners who needed medical assistance or rest. After gathering early in the morning to set up the aid stations, prepare equipment, and hold meetings, the race finally began. As runners passed by one after another, the students were tasked with guiding those who needed rest or treatment into the tents near the aid station entrances, recording their names in the reception book, and encouraging people to drink fluids. It was a day of dedicated work to ensure that all participants in the marathon could finish the race safely.

Students have commented that through volunteer activities they have learned the skills necessary for nurses and the importance of interprofessional collaboration. Our faculty plans to continue participating in these activities in the future.

[Comments from participating students]
"I learned the ability to assess a patient's condition and make a decision in a short amount of time, how to respond to emergencies with limited supplies, and the importance of working quickly as a team. Through this experience, I have strengthened my desire to become a nurse who can respond flexibly in emergency situations."

"We worked together not only with medical professionals, but also with government officials, firefighters, members of the Self-Defense Forces, and volunteer students from other schools, so it was both beneficial and enjoyable to hear and interact with a variety of people."

"It was a valuable experience to be able to provide support to runners from all over the world. I felt that we were able to provide prompt medical care to runners not only by providing support at our assigned location, but also by coordinating with other medical locations. It has really increased my desire to participate again next year."
