Bathed in the soft spring light of the Osaka Castle campus, the new students of Faculty of Health and Nutrition, though nervous about their first university classes, have finally begun their four-year journey to becoming registered dietitians.
The first step in this process is the "Basic Chemistry Experiment" class.
The first lesson began with carefully reviewing the names and uses of each piece of equipment essential for experiments. It was a crucial time to thoroughly learn basic operations such as how to read measurements on a graduated cylinder and how to handle a flask.
At first, the students seemed nervous, but as they practiced together in groups, encouraging each other, they naturally started talking more, and the atmosphere in the laboratory became more relaxed. "Is it like this?" "Look, I did it!" were some of the voices that filled the room, and their initially cautious movements gradually became more confident with the help of advice from their teachers and classmates.
In the "Basic Chemistry Experiments" class, students will thoroughly learn the fundamentals while prioritizing safety. Going forward, they can expect deeper learning and new discoveries. We will continue to support the growth of our new students as they embark on their journey to becoming registered dietitians.
≪Student feedback after the class≫
I was nervous at first, but I gradually got used to it as I worked together with my group members. I felt like this was a truly university-level learning experience.
I had a hard time with chemistry in high school, but I thought that experiments using familiar food items would be fun and engaging.
