On October 17th, nine third-year students Faculty of Health and Nutrition enrolled in the "Social Collaboration Seminar [Health]," participated in the "45th Everyone's Health Exhibition" held in Nishinari Ward, Osaka City, as part of their coursework. On that day, they worked as cooking assistants in the "Exciting Cooking" session for children up to junior high school age. The menu for this session was donuts made with tofu. The students had prepared for the day's activities by conducting trial runs on campus beforehand.
In "Exciting Cooking," the following roles were assigned to each step:
① Assisting with the process of mixing ingredients and piping them into donut shapes.
② Deep-fry the squeezed dough.
③ Assisting with toppings for fried donuts
In addition, we worked with Ms. Takeuchi, a registered dietitian in Nishinari Ward, on practical activities such as setting up a dining space and providing tea.
The "Exciting Cooking" session was held twice, every hour, and approximately 25 children, ranging from preschoolers to upper elementary school students, participated.
The participating students were third-year students who completed "Clinical Fieldwork II (Public Nutrition)" this August. In this activity, they were required not only to carry out pre-assigned tasks but also to observe the children's behavior and reactions at the time and respond accordingly. They also gained experience as members of the staff, such as communicating with parents and paying attention to the overall progress of the activity.
Although it was a tense situation to be in, it was a valuable opportunity for the students to apply what they had learned in classes and practical training, and to think and act independently according to the situation. We hope that this experience will enhance the students' overall practical skills and contribute to their future learning and careers.
