SUZUI Emiko Professor Doctor of Health Sciences - Education:
Completed doctoral course, Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine
Contributing to global society with international outlook, research capabilities, and practical skills
When I was performing prenatal checkups using ultrasound diagnosis, all the pregnant women were very happy when they saw the images on the ultrasound diagnostic device, saying things like "It's cute" and "There's a baby." However, I don't think they were able to read the images, which are unclear in black and white, so I wondered what on earth women were looking at, and that's what started my research. Then, through participant observation of prenatal checkups and interviews after the examination, I clarified that the image is framed by the words of the examiner, and that the formation of cognition is influenced by factors other than vision, such as the subject's imagination and expectations, and promotes positive emotions. In addition, I analyzed the factors that led to the unique situation in Japan where ultrasound diagnosis is used at every prenatal checkup, and also considered how policy guidance due to the change to a knowledge-intensive industrial structure has rapidly promoted the spread of medical electronics equipment, and proposed a reconsideration of how it is used.
In other words, we make the questions we have during our daily encounters with subjects our research topics, collect data on their opinions, and sincerely listen to and analyze what the data tells us, which leads to new discoveries. Research is about pursuing further truths and working to improve care.
Our graduate school aims to train nursing professionals who can contribute to a changing global society by cultivating the internationalism and research skills to hear the voices of people from diverse cultures that have yet to be heard, as well as the practical skills to provide care that is in line with the culture of each individual.
